Eric Johnson secured a defense verdict in a medical malpractice trial in Supreme Court, Onondaga County. Eric represented a general surgeon who plaintiff claimed negligently performed surgery to repair the patient’s multiple large abdominal hernias with ‘loss of domain’. Plaintiff claimed that because of the surgeon’s allegedly improper surgical technique, the patient suffered a life threatening post-operative condition known as abdominal compartment syndrome three days later, which required a return to the operating room for emergency abdominal decompression surgery, and four additional surgeries over the course of the next ten days to address and partially close the surgical wound. The patient thereafter had an open abdominal wound which needed regular care that had not completely healed by the time of his death 14 months later. After a week long trial, the unanimous jury found in favor of Eric’s client, finding him not negligent.
