Laurence “Fritz” Sovik (1932-2018)

Fritz Sovik, the Patriarch of our law firm, passed away last Friday after a battle with cancer. Fritz was a tough, aggressive, brilliant warrior at all levels. Indeed, he was the essence of Smith Sovik; professionally and culturally his positive influence is omnipresent and it continues to dominate our halls and offices, and his example is one we all strive to follow. One of the preeminent trial lawyers to ever grace a courtroom, Fritz led by example with class, humility and humor. He not only was a fierce competitor in trial but also a learned appellate advocate. His prose was one of a kind… he was a master of the language with the highest legal acumen. An outstanding lawyer and a singularly unique individual, Fritz was a legendary icon in the courtrooms of the Empire State. An avid reader and true Renaissance man, Fritz loved history and Shakespeare; he loved sports, poetry and the theatre, and his Alma Maters, Christian Brothers Academy and Notre Dame. A man with infinite knowledge who enjoyed the simple things, Fritz will be missed greatly but he will continue to inspire us to always work hard to be the best that we can be and to play to win with honor and integrity.
